Research

Throughout the process of Macbeth, our Dramaturgy team has been doing extensive research on various aspects of the play, its history, symbolism, and language.

The Iambic Pentameter is the most frequent rhyming pattern within the play. Every line starts with a capital letter, each foot has five steps, and there are 2 feet in each line. Therefore, this makes 10 beats, which resembles a heartbeat. Because people in Shakespeare's time had a 3rd-grade level education, rhymes made it easier for them to read and memorize.

There was a lot of symbolism with numbers within this play, especially with the numbers three and eight.

The symbolism of three:

Beginning, Middle, End

Birth, Life, Death

Body, Mind, Spirit

Past, Present, Future

Oak, Ash, Thorn

Father, Son, Holy Spirit

Three Fates

Three Witches

Bloody, Bold, Resolute

The symbolism of eight:

Infinity

Symbol of the Cosmic Christ

Figuring The Immutable Eternity of Self-Destruction

The Totality of the Universe

Number and Balance of the Cosmic Order

Expressing Nature

Symbol of New Life, the Final Ressurection, and the Anticipated Ressurection that is The Baptism

Represents the Earth

Symbol of Love and Friendship
